NEWPORT NEWS—On August 5, 2023, Cups and Claws Cafe, a cat café that offers coffee, fresh baked snacks, and an opportunity to socialize with cats that roam the space, will celebrate its one-year anniversary. The event will be held from 11am to 4pm at its location at 11006 Warwick Blvd. in Newport News.
The celebration will include an official Grand Opening ceremony as well as a community event that focuses on animal advocacy. The event will include four food trucks, 40 vendors, face painting, and more. Entertainment will be provided by local group Spacefish.
According to a press release from Cups and Claws Café, the business began as a way to advocate for homeless felines, partner with local rescues and other small businesses, and educate the community about cats. The cafe first opened in the spring of 2022.
After 26 years of military service, co-owner Phillip and his wife and co-owner Kim, who retired after 24 years of teaching, wanted to continue to give back to the community. As animal lovers and fosters for many organizations, they decided to be the first to endeavor in opening a place where people of all ages can come for both entertainment and support of the rescue community.
