NEWPORT NEWS—On Wednesday, July 12, astrophysicist Jack Singal will present “New Views of the Universe” at 1700 Brewing, which is located at 11838 Canon Blvd., Suite 400 in Newport News. Singal is an associate professor of physics at the University of Richmond and former researcher at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and Stanford University.
Profs and Pints Hampton Roads is a series that brings college faculty members into bars, cafés, company offices, and other off-campus venues to share their knowledge. No tests or quizzes will be given, so feel free to enjoy a pint or two while learning more about the universe.
“New Views of the Universe” is a fascinating look at how telescopes that see forms of light invisible to the naked eye are showing the world distant galaxies and amazing phenomena that were previously unknown, giving individuals an opportunity to see things as they were far back in time.
Images recently produced by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope have reignited interest in the frontiers of astronomy. But its voyage is just the latest in a series of remarkable space telescope missions, dating back almost to the dawn of the space age, that have revolutionized humankind’s understanding of the universe and what happens in it.
Singal received rave reviews when he recently gave this talk in Richmond at the Virginia Museum of History and Culture. His career has involved studying the universe in all different kinds of light, including radio waves, microwaves, ultraviolet rays, X-rays, and gamma rays.
For those who have ever wondered how we know that the universe is full of mysterious dark matter, or how researchers are able to see what things were like 14 billion years ago, this talk will provide some answers.
Advanced tickets are $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees and are available online. Tickets at the door will be available for $17 or $15 with student ID. The lecture will begin around 6:30pm and is expected to last about two hours.
