NEWPORT NEWS—The United States Department of Energy’s Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab) has a long history of developing concept, technology, and device innovations in nuclear physics. The research and development efforts demonstrated by staff members in groups throughout the laboratory have led to and supported breakthroughs in everything from better methods for detecting and treating diseases to groundbreaking technologies for monitoring and blocking radiation, and new techniques for removing “forever chemicals” from wastewater.
On Friday, March 24, Jefferson Lab held a press conference to announce that all of those research and development efforts will be brought together to form the lab’s new Biomedical Research & Innovation Center (BRIC). The center will establish a central hub for transitioning state-of-the-art research and technology development from nuclear and particle physics to biological and health-related fields.
