YORK-Dick’s Sporting Goods in the Marquis Shopping Center will permanently close at the beginning of January.

An employee at the store confirmed in a phone call with Peninsula Chronicle on December 14 that the sporting goods store will close on January 2, 2022. The store’s lease is ending, and Dick’s Sporting Goods apparently decided not to renew.

“They told us it is because the lease is up,” said the employee, who declined to give his name. “I would rather not say anything else.”

Dick’s Sporting Goods, which is located at 120 Gristmil Plaza, first opened in the shopping center in March 2008. Other nearby locations are at The Patrick Henry Mall in Newport News and Short Pump in Richmond.

Marquis Shopping Center off of Humelsine Parkway has been struggling since it first opened. Another major anchor, JC Penney, closed in 2015. Earlier this year, it was announced that the vacant JC Penney building will be converted to a church.
