GLOUCESTER – Bay Transit held a ribbon-cutting ceremony July 27 for a new bus shelter at the River Bend Apartments on George Washington Memorial Highway in central Gloucester County.
Bay Transit is a division of Bay Aging and provides public transportation throughout the Middle Peninsula, the Northern Neck, New Kent County, and Charles City County. It is the only public transportation service in the region, providing more than 140,000 rides each year. It allows people of all ages to get to work, medical appointments, the grocery store, social gatherings, and more.
Most of the company’s riders take advantage of the “demand-responsive service,” which costs $2 per ride.
“This is literally door-to-door transportation where the customer makes a reservation at least 24 hours in advance and we pick them up at their home and take them to/from their destination,” Mike Norvell, manager of marketing and public relations for Bay Transit, said in an email.
The other option is a “deviated” fixed route, which is 50 cents a ride.
“This is the more traditional bus service you would find in places like Hampton Roads or Richmond, operating on a fixed route and schedule,” he said.
All routes are ADA compliant. For more information, visit Transportation – Bay Aging.
