NEWPORT NEWS—The Yard District will be the site of an elite amateur bicycle racing event that will take place on Saturday, July 30 from 3pm to 9:30pm. The event, The Newport News Twilight Criterium, is sanctioned by USA Cycling and is sponsored by Newport News and THR Cycling Club.

This new sporting event will feature a one-kilometer course (0.621 miles) that starts and ends at City Hall, located at 2400 Washington Ave. The course includes eight turns as it covers two square blocks that utilize Huntington and West Avenues and 25th– 27th Streets. The short uphill and fast downhill event, along with twilight, dusk, and dark conditions are expected to challenge the more than 300 beginner to elite cyclists expected to participate.

The Newport News Twilight Criterium offers eight races for men and women of varying ages and expertise, including a free Kid’s Fun Race for children three to nine years of age. Cash prizes range from $250 to $2,500 and are made possible by sponsors including Compass Intermodal, Hornsby Tire and Service Center, Hylton Builders, TREK, Village Bicycles, Cutaway, and many others.

The public is encouraged to come to the Yard District to cheer on the cyclists. There is plenty of free parking, food trucks will be available, and visitors can take advantage of free bike and safety checks offered by TREK stores of Hampton Roads.

The New Local News Model

On July 1, we started a new way to pay for news. Yes, we want you to subscribe, but we know nobody subscribes to every site they visit just because there’s a paywall.

So if you don’t want to subscribe (even at the low price of $39.99 for a year), you can pay for access to individual articles. Or just buy a 24-hour pass, as if you were buying a single copy of a newspaper. We use a new payment service called Transact, which lets you pay for individual articles in as little as three seconds. And you will get $3 in credit when you sign up (just an email address, no credit card required), which will let you pay for at least 20 articles.

This is new for everyone, so we’re going to ease you into this. Initially, there won’t be many articles that you have to pay for. Short ones will always be free. And even the longer stories will let you read the first half or so for free. We’d love to hear what you think, so send us a note at [email protected].
