HAMPTON—City officials with the Hampton Planning Commission and Hampton City Council held a special joint session recently to seek guidance on the desired policy framework to establish conditions that should apply to the issuance of the first short-term rental (STR) Use Permits.
Prior to December 2013, the ordinance for STRs did not address rentals hosted on platforms such as Airbnb and Vacation Rental By Owner (VRBO). At that time, STRs were permitted by-right as an accessory use to single family dwellings. If the home was primarily used for STRs, it was categorized as a Bed & Breakfast and was subject to filing a use permit with the city.
