HAMPTON—The Pollo Loco building that sat empty for years at the corner of Power Plant Parkway and Pine Chapel Road in front of Bass Pro Shops is vacant no more. MOMO’s Café will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony in celebration of its recent move to the location. The event will take place on Thursday, July 21, 2022, from 2pm to 4pm.

Owner Martha Bennett opened the café, which was previously located in the City Center area of Newport News, in 2008. The business first began as a personal chef service that delivered prepared meals to local homes. The Newport News location was rather small, in Bennett’s opinion, and she had to start turning customers away because they couldn’t keep up with the demand. Then covid hit.

“An office park is not the place to be operating a restaurant during a pandemic, so I had to reinvent myself,” said Bennett. “I thought it would be a good time to move and I found this space here in Hampton. We moved into the space in December 2021 and opened in May of this year. So, here we are.”

The original ribbon-cutting ceremony was scheduled for June but had to be delayed because some of the Hampton city officials expected to be at the event had a conflict and could not attend. Instead of missing out on an opportunity to support a new local business, they chose to postpone. Now that the new event has been scheduled, Bennett is very excited.

The New Local News Model

On July 1, we started a new way to pay for news. Yes, we want you to subscribe, but we know nobody subscribes to every site they visit just because there’s a paywall.

So if you don’t want to subscribe (even at the low price of $39.99 for a year), you can pay for access to individual articles. Or just buy a 24-hour pass, as if you were buying a single copy of a newspaper. We use a new payment service called Transact, which lets you pay for individual articles in as little as three seconds. And you will get $3 in credit when you sign up (just an email address, no credit card required), which will let you pay for at least articles.

This is new for everyone, so we’re going to ease you into this. Initially, there won’t be many articles that you have to pay for. Short ones will always be free. And even the longer stories will let you read the first half or so for free. We’d love to hear what you think, so send us a note at [email protected].
