NEWPORT NEWS—Newport News Tourism recently hosted a variety of events and activities in honor of National Travel & Tourism Week to highlight the essential role travel plays in moving the economy forward. Programs included a Familiarization Tour of Newport News for frontline personnel and hospitality industry employees as well as the annual Tourism Awards Luncheon.

During the luncheon, which was held May 10 at the Newport News/Williamsburg Airport, awards were presented to a hospitality industry employee who has made an outstanding contribution in promoting travel and tourism in the city, and to a city attraction that creates breakthrough experiences for residents and guests.

Madison “Maddie” Spielberger, who works as bar lead and keyholder at Second Street Bistro 115 Arthur Way, Unit B, was named the Gregory Cherry Tourism Professional of the Year. Newport News Mayor Phillip Jones presented the award during the luncheon.
