HAMPTON—What’s in a name? When driving or walking around Hampton, residents and visitors will see or hear a variety of words that are associated with early oyster harvesting in Hampton without even knowing it. Shell Road, Darling Stadium, and Mallory Street in Phoebus are a few good examples.

Why is that? When the City of Hampton was burned down during the Civil War, it was rebuilt due primarily to the efforts of the waterman and oyster harvests from the Hampton River.

The New Local News Model
