WILLIAMSBURG-Waller Mill Park, located at 901 Airport Rd. in Greater Williamsburg, will return to its routine daily operations on Friday, July 1, following a previous closure of two days a week due to a staffing shortage.
The park, known for its fishing, boating, and hiking, announced earlier this spring that it would be closed on Tuesdays and Thursdays because it did not have enough part-time employees to maintain normal operations. The park has been closed at least one day a week since October 2021.
To address its labor shortage, the city of Williamsburg recently raised its part-time hourly rate to $19 per hour, which will start with the budget for the new fiscal year on July 1. As a result of the wage increase, the city’s Parks and Recreation Department received dozens of job applications for positions at both Waller Mill Park and the Quarterpath Recreation Center. A total of 28 new employees have been hired at both locations, 19 at Waller Mill Park and nine at the recreation center.
