The Sipping Flea Makes An Appearance On HGTV House Hunters Episode

JAMES CITY-The Sipping Flea coffee shop was visited by an HGTV film crew while they were in town featuring a couple who were looking for a home in the area through Liz Moore & Associates. While filming the episode that aired Tuesday, November 23, The Sipping Flee served as the backdrop while the episode’s featured couple discussed their future housing choices.

“They reached out to us, and we were both thrilled and shocked that they chose our coffee shop to film part of the episode out of several other coffee shops that they looked at,” said Nancy Lee, who owns The Sipping Flea along with her husband, Jeff.

Lee said business has been on the upswing since the episode aired last month. The couple posted an announcement on Facebook that mentioned the House Hunters visit and have garnered a new following.

“We had a reach of 17,000 people through Facebook and hundreds of people commented on the post,” said Lee. Social media has been a favorable business tool throughout the unexpected opportunity of being featured on national television. Lee said the producer of the episode chose their establishment because of its customer reviews and quaint, non-commercialized setting.

As a young business that opened eight months ago during the covid-19 pandemic, the Lees are appreciative of the national recognition. Some of the couple’s “regulars” didn’t recognize the shop at first glance while watching the episode. HGTV producers asked that anything with a registered trademark be removed from the walls prior to filming.

“It’s kind of a homey hodgepodge because there was nothing brand-new inside when we opened our shop except for the expresso machine,” said Lee. Most of what meets the eye has been repurposed, from wall décor to the shop’s wood flooring.

The menu is indicative of the owners’ love for bulldogs. The Belly Rub, Muddy Dog, and Puppy Kiss expressos are a few of the coffee drinks on tap in addition to baked goods, such as pastries, bagels, and mini donuts that are made on site. The café offers a pet-friendly patio for guests and dog treats for canine visitors.

The Sipping Flea is located at 6965 Richmond Road, in Colonial Towne Plaza, across from Go-Karts Plus. Hours of operation are 8am to 3pm Tuesday through Thursday and 8am to 4pm Friday and Saturday. For more information, please visit their website at www.thesippingflea.com or Facebook page.
