Say Farewell To Twisted Knot Brewing Company And Hello To 1700 Brewing

NEWPORT NEWS—Twisted Knot Brewing Company, formerly located at 11838 Canon Blvd., Suite 400 in Newport News, served its last round of drinks in late October and is now closed. However, a new nano brewery quickly jumped in to take its place. 1700 Brewing reopened in the location on November 5, although the grand opening ceremony will not officially take place until January 8, 2022.

The new 1700 Brewing is open Friday through Monday from 3pm to 9pm and is currently offering a very limited release of Remember Everyone Deployed (RED), their Farmhouse-style Red Ale, and the 10-99 Bourbon Barrel Aged Stout. 10-99 is a police code for “wanted.”

What does the “1700” stand for? According to their Facebook page, the brewery is 100 percent owned and operated by veterans, and they honor their military heritage and service heavily in their beer names and the look and feel of the brewery. The “1700” moniker is military time for 5pm, which is beer-drinker’s code for drinking time (it’s always 5 o’clock somewhere).

In addition to honoring their military heritage, the brewery offers a “Pay It Forward” board, where anyone can prepay for a beer that is dedicated to military members in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard, as well as local heroes, such as firefighters, the police, teachers, and medical personnel. Once purchased, the person buying the beer can have a mark placed on the Pay It Forward chalkboard under the group designation they want to honor (such as Teachers).
