The Yorktown Arts Foundation (YAF) and On the Hill Gallery will showcase artwork from active duty military and veterans in a juried art show November 3-20 at the gallery.

Veterans and service members of all branches of the military are encouraged to enter their works the weekend of October 29-31 at the gallery. There is no entry fee and the exhibit is free and open to the public. Unlike some of the shows held at the gallery, participants are not required to be a member of the YAF to enter the show.

Artists are permitted to enter two pieces of artwork. Categories included are 3D, 2D, and photography. The 2D category includes media such as paintings, prints, pen and ink, while the 3D category is composed of clay, wood, jewelry, and some mixed media. Awards include $100 for first place, $75 for second, and $50 for third place winners.

The YAF outreach event doesn’t limit the subject matter to a military theme, though it is encouraged. There is no size limit for entries. Lisa Trichel-Beavers, current president of YAF and a clay artist, said one of the most impressive entries she’s seen in the past was a large 3D entry that resembled a piano. “The artist had certain notes that were cut out of wood and when you read the chords it was a Beatles song,” said Trichel-Beavers. “It was very artistic, something different and off the wall.”

While there is no size limit, there is discretion when it comes to content. The gallery is a family-friendly establishment and asks that subject matter is appropriate for children to view. The exhibit will be officially open November 3 with a reception November 6 from 6pm to 8pm at the gallery. Award winners will be announced at the reception, and the public is invited to attend.

“We’re enthusiastic about the event, especially because of the missed year in 2020 due to the pandemic,” said Trichel-Beavers. The reception will be held outside. The gallery follows all CDC guidelines and masks are required when viewing the exhibition.

On the Hill Gallery is located at 402 Main St., Yorktown. Hours of operation are Tuesday through Saturday from 11am to 5 pm. and Sundays from noon to 5pm. For more information, please visit www.onthehillgallery.com.

The New Local News Model

On July 1, we started a new way to pay for news. Yes, we want you to subscribe, but we know nobody subscribes to every site they visit just because there's a paywall.

So if you don't want to subscribe (even at the low price of $39.99 for a year), you can pay for access to individual articles. Or just buy a 24-hour pass, as if you were buying a single copy of a newspaper. We use a new payment service called Transact, which lets you pay for individual articles in as little as three seconds. And you will get $3 in credit when you sign up (just an email address, no credit card required), which will let you pay for at least 20 articles.

This is new for everyone, so we're going to ease you into this. Initially, there won't be many articles that you have to pay for. Short ones will always be free. And even the longer stories will let you read the first half or so for free. We'd love to hear what you think, so send us a note at feedback@peninsulachronicle.com.
