WILLIAMSBURG-Greater Williamsburg Chamber of Commerce has named Matchsticks BBQ as the 2021 Health Promoter of the Year.
The Health Promoter Award recognizes individuals, civic groups, or businesses who excel in creating opportunities for members of the community to live healthier lives, even though it may not be the primary purpose of their business to do so.
Matchsticks BBQ, which will soon open in Midtown Row, received the honor for the creation of The Matchbox Foundation in the summer of 2020. The foundation provided free weekly meals to children in Greater Williamsburg and helped address food insecurity for many local students.
“I am extremely honored to receive this award,” Matt Sileno, owner of Matchsticks BBQ, said in a release. “Providing for children in need and helping families is very close to my heart, and to be recognized for these efforts is beyond appreciated. I am grateful to have an opportunity to help the community, and the work is never done.”
The Matchbox Foundation also collected donations to pay off more than $1,600 in school lunch debt that had accumulated throughout the pandemic, a time when many families lost income.
