Hampton Cup Regatta Returns For 95th Running

HAMPTON—The Hampton Cup Regatta returns for its 95th running on September 25–26. Racing will begin approximately 11am each day on Mill Creek, located at the entrance of Fort Monroe from the East Mercury Boulevard Bridge in Hampton. The bridge will open for spectators at 10 a.m. This is the oldest continuously running hydroplane race in America, and one of the last remaining races in the country that is free of charge.

This year, the Hampton Cup Regatta is hosting the American Powerboat Association’s Eastern Divisional Championships and welcomes some of the fastest watercrafts in the world. With boats as long as 24 feet, and some reaching speeds of 150 miles per hour, these vessels often set both national and world records. Highly anticipated this year is the return of the Grand Prix hydros, which can achieve 175 mph.

The weekend will kick off with an event happening at Oozlefinch Beers & Blending on Friday, September 24. A multitude of craft beer favorites will be on tap. Music by the Jason Cale Band begins at 6:30pm. Food trucks will also be on site.

Souvenir programs, annual limited-edition T-shirts, as well as other collectibles, will be on sale during the races. Everyone’s favorite car show will also be returning. This year, the children’s area will feature games and activities hosted by Calvary Assembly of God and the Fort Monroe YMCA, among others. Pirates from Blackbeard’s Crew will be returning to pillage and educate. Lawn chairs are highly encouraged as bleacher seating is limited. Attendees are also encouraged to bring pop-up tents or umbrellas for shade.

Admission is free due to generous support by The City of Hampton, the Fort Monroe Authority, the Partnership for a new Phoebus, Prillaman Crane & Rigging, Old Point National Bank, Auto-Plus Auto Parts, M. Price Distributing, the Baumann Family, Atlantic Communications, Bayport Credit Union, Dodd RV, Waterways Surveys, GJBTV.com, SKY4 TV, Sinclair Communications, Oozlefinch Craft Brewery, Stuft Restaurant of Phoebus, Frito Lay, Outback Steakhouse of Hampton, BoatUS, Langley Speedway, Herc Rentals, and Hampton Roads Event Rentals.
